What is HOSA?

Serving future health professionals since 1976, HOSA was created with the idea of providing students opportunities to develop as a leader and a future employee. With over 140,000 members across the nation, it is safe to say that HOSA has met our mission! HOSA creates driven, determined student leaders that are excited about healthcare and all that HOSA has to offer. Above all, HOSA is a tool-a tool vital to the success of students, teachers, and health professionals. HOSA is 100% healthcare and connects all hubs of the healthcare field. One experience ignites another creating a chain reaction between those who teach, learn, and do.

HOSA operates as an integral component of the health science education curriculum. Through its network of state and local chapters, HOSA provides powerful instructional tools, recognition, leadership, networking, scholarships, and connections to the healthcare industry to thousands of members across the United States.

Through the HOSA Competitive Events Program, members can compete in teams or as individuals in over 55 different events related to all aspects of the health care industry. HOSA integrates into the Health Science Technology Education curriculum to develop and recognize smart, dedicated, and passionate future health professionals.

Mission of HOSA:
The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science technology education students, therefore, helping students to meet the needs of the health care community.

  • I have been an RN since 1996. I first obtained my nursing assistant certification (CNA) around 1990 or 1991 (way too long to remember :)). I attended Lincoln Trail College in 1992 to start my general course for my nursing program. In 1995, at the end of my first year of the nursing program I received my Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) degree. I then started working as a nurse at Miller\\\'s Merry Manor which is a long-term care facility (I had already been working there as a CNA). Then I received my Registered Nurse license (RN) a year later. While working at Miller\\\'s, my occupations included CNA, LPN, RN, and MDS Coordinator. I then later decided to take my nursing degree a step further by working at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. The unit I worked on was the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and would occasionally float to our sister unit, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) when needed. During that time, again I thought I needed to take my degree a step further by obtaining a higher degree, and started at Indiana Wesleyan University for my Bachelor\\\'s Degree in Nursing. While in the Bachelor\\\'s program I started working at Royal Oaks Rehabilitation Center as an MDS Coordination. I was not in this position long when I heard about the about the opening for the Health Careers teacher, available at Parke-Vermillion Education & Training Interlocal (PVETI). I have always wanted to be a teacher and thought I could have the best of both worlds by teaching Health Careers and being a teacher. At this point in my career, I am again taking it a step further and am currently in the process of obtaining my Master’s Degree with my focus as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

  • Hello HOSA members! I am Matthew Hollon and it is my honor to serve as your 2016-2017 Indiana HOSA State President. My journey as a member started 3 years ago. During this time, HOSA has changed my life in every aspect possible. I would not be the leader I am today if it weren\'t for you, the members, giving me the opportunity to serve as one of your state officers. I am a recent graduate from North Central High School and the J. Everett Light Career Center where I earned my Certified Nursing Assistant certification. Beginning this Fall Semester, I will be attending the University of Indianapolis as I pursue my aspirations of becoming a Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon and plan on playing baseball and football there.
My favorite quote comes from James Dean, \"Dream as if you\'ll live forever. But live as if you\'ll die today.\" HOSA members, let\'s make this another blockbuster year for our organization as we achieve our goals of becoming future health professionals together. I look forward to meeting you all at the multiple conferences and school visits throughout the year.

Hello Indiana HOSA! My name is Kim Hazel and I am thrilled to serve as your 2016-2017 Vice- President of Public Relations. I graduated from Area 31 Career Center in 2014 and I now attend Butler University where I am pursuing my Bachelor\\\'s Degree in Chemistry. My career aspiration is to work in a lab as a forensic scientist after graduation this spring.
I am an avid gamer as well as a writer. If I\\\'m not studying somewhere on Butler University\\\'s beautiful campus, you can usually find me going on a run or at the Pi Beta Phi house. My favorite quote actually comes from a game but says it best: \\\"It doesn\\\'t matter that they won\\\'t remember me. What matters is I helped.\\\"
One goal I have this year as a state officer is to help as many HOSA members as possible discover their passion. I am grateful for another opportunity to lead Indiana HOSA this year and I am excited to get to know all of you!

  • Hello Indiana HOSA! My name is Sierra Stepanovich and I am thrilled to serve as your 2016-2017 Vice President of Development. I am a senior at Munster High School and a second year dental student at Hammond Area Career Center. I have a passion for health care and my future career goal is to be a dental hygienist. My interests (including HOSA) are outdoor activities, meeting new people, and spending quality time with my family.
A quote I like to live by is strive for progress not perfection. Too often we forget to celebrate small victories and get discouraged when our goals are yet to be met. I believe it is the day to day progress that leads to success. In order to make progress it must be driven by passion.
I am looking forward to making this an unforgettable year for Indiana HOSA. Remember to always stay true to yourself and follow your passion. HOSA opens the door to endless opportunities and I encourage all HOSA members to go after them!

  • Hello Indiana HOSA! My name is Senchelle Navarre and I am delighted to serve as your State Treasurer. I am a junior at Pike High School and my career goal is to become a plastic surgeon. I am a native of Haiti and I love traveling to other countries.
Madam CJ Walker once said, \"Don\'t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them!\" This quote is empowering as it encourages one to take that first step in order to be successful. I hope to inspire HOSA members to take those first steps and become great leaders in their schools and communities. Through HOSA we all can accomplish so much more than we ever imagined!
I look forward to meeting you soon and sharing such amazing experiences. Au Revoir!

Hi Indiana HOSA! My name is Emily Westrich and I am pleased to serve as your State Historian. I am a senior at North High School and a Health Science student at the Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center. In addition to HOSA my interests include being active in my county 4H, participating in school activities such as National Honor Society and the Peers Projects, and volunteering at my local hospice. I also enjoy teaching Spanish to third graders at Elberfeld Elementary School. I want to become a pediatric rheumatologist so I can help children with arthritis. This goal stems from my own personal experience when I was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at the age of four.

Abraham Lincoln once said, \"Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.\" This quote describes my personal ambition and drive. As your State Historian, I hope to share my energy and enthusiasm with fellow members, encouraging them to push to achieve their goals. I look forward to meeting you and strengthening HOSA; Future Health Professionals together.

  • Hello Indiana HOSA! My name is Kelsi McCauley and I have the privilege of serving as your 2016-2017 State Representative. I am a graduate of Central Nine Career Center, and am currently pursuing my Bachelor\\\'s Degree at Ball State University. I am actively involved in my community when I am not in school or participating in HOSA. I work in the Emergency Department at my local hospital, as well as volunteer in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and currently training for the Disaster Action Team with the American Red Cross. My eventual career goal is to become a pediatric neurosurgeon and donate my spare time to Doctors Without Borders. During my 5 years as a HOSA member, the number of skills and the amount of knowledge I have gained are immeasurable. That being said, I believe the following quote says it best: \"Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and the thinkers, but most of all surround yourself with those who see the greatness within you, even when you do not see it yourself\" Edmund Lee. My time in HOSA has proven to me that our members are in fact the best of the best, and the potential that each of you hold is incredible! If nothing else, know at the end of the day that each of you share a common goal, because we ARE the future of health care.

My favorite quote is \"Work hard in silence and let the success make the noise.\" HOSA members, I challenge you to study hard and work hard and the success will speak for itself! I look forward to meeting you all and serving as your President-Elect. La revedere!
